STEPHANIE JAFFE

MIXED MEDIA

Stephanie_headshot_2.jpg

Stephanie Jaffe is a mixed media assemblage and mosaic artist whose latest work centers on portraits of iconic women as well as well-known artworks.  Each piece in this collection depicts a narrative about historic figures or artworks which have helped shaped the world we live in today.

Jaffe’s work is fueled by her love of collecting nostalgia, her passion for recycling and the challenge of how to give old objects a new, exciting life.

“Like contemporary artists Vanessa Germain and Nick Cave, my practice is driven by a fervent dedication to collecting, recycling, and the transformative process of breathing new life into discarded objects. I employ a palette of once-loved materials—vintage ceramics, glass, buttons, and plastic toys—sourced from yard sales, thrift stores, antique shops, and online platforms. I meticulously arrange these elements into powerful mosaic portraits, finishing each piece with resin cast directly into the artwork's frame.”  - Stephanie Jaffe

Once refashioned into portraits, the artwork tells the story of the subject and evokes memories and personal connections. It is here where the complex interplay between memory and the emotional resonance of objects is considered.

Stephanie Jaffe was born in Brooklyn and raised in Long Island, New York. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in ceramics and glass from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. During her college education she studied in Rome, Italy where her love for implementing mixed media into assemblages was born. Upon her return to the states, she founded Germantown Glass, which became renowned for their refined objects d’art. Stephanie’s work has evolved to include mosaic painting and sculpture. For the past three decades she has also worked as an accomplished public artist in Miami, Florida. Her work has been displayed and sold in galleries and museums across the country.
