As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary of its founding, The WIT

Gallery reflects on the enduring power of symbols: How they evolve,

fracture, and ultimately hold meaning across generations.

In this spirit, we are proud to present works by Elizabeth Barek and Kenneth Young, two artists whose practices engage deeply with the American flag, not as a fixed emblem, but as a living, contested, and resilient form.

We the People by Elizabeth Barek. Mixed media on canvas. 32” h x 42" w framed $ 5,200

Elizabeth Barek’s flag paintings move between reverence and inquiry. Through layered textures and nuanced color fields, her work suggests both the passage of time and the weight of history embedded in the fabric of the nation. These are not static images, but meditations on identity, memory, and the quiet tension between unity and individuality.

In contrast, Kenneth Young’s United We Stand asserts itself with immediacy and force.

The composition carries a sense of urgency, reflecting the fractures of the present moment while insisting on the possibility of cohesion. It is a work that does not resolve easily, instead inviting viewers to confront the complexity of togetherness in an era defined by division.

Together, these works of art create a dialogue that feels especially resonant now. As we near this historic milestone, they ask us to consider not only what the flag has represented, but what it might still become.

The WIT Gallery invites you to experience this exhibition as both a visual encounter and an intellectual one. An opportunity to reflect on the evolving narrative of a nation, and the role that art plays in shaping its history.
