Priscilla Robinson divides her time between studios in Austin, Texas and Taos, New Mexico. In the early 1980’s she began working with handmade paper and is a pioneer in introducing the medium as a contemporary vision.

Robinson’s work has been shown in the Obara Paper Museum, Japan, the Holland Paper Biennale, The International Triennale in Charmey, Switzerland and the Shanghai Biennale. She exhibits regularly in national and international galleries and has created commissions for Boston University, Chevron, Vanderbilt University and many private residences.

My work is an exploration of transitions, the ambiguous spaces between contrasts. I am drawn to the void between front and back, up and down, or left and right, finding that these spaces are not empty, but pulsing with potential. I focus on the gradations that emerge as these divisions evolve and dissolve. I work with small units—feathers, cones, spheres, rolled spirals—grouping and layering them to build larger wholes. These microstructures become landscapes. 

 

Each unit is complete, but together they reveal the harmony of the part and of the whole. Unlike traditional painting where paint strokes create a composition, I begin with a mass of my three-dimensional "brushstrokes" to discover rhythm and movement. I work with plant materials in both liquid and solid states, forming sheets of paper from raw fibers. For me, the deckle edge is not a boundary but a dynamic, irregular line that adds a third dimension to the work. 

 

I have lived on the California coast and in northern Norway, where light, sky, and sea meet. Now, I maintain studios in northern New Mexico and central Texas—where light, sky and land meet. These contrasting environments inform my work and my life. Through color, texture, and natural materials, I capture the rhythm of these shifting environments.
