While working a piece I keep thinking about what it could turn into. I prefer to let the glass itself dictate the final piece, exploring the infinite range of paradoxes: glass is fragile and solid, transparent and opaque, refractive and reflective. Colors within each piece span the entire spectrum created by hand shaping laminated layers of optic crystal, profusion, and dichroic coated glass as well as old Lighthouse Lenses.
Cold working is technically defined as changing the shape or surface texture of glass. This is done through a series of tools and hand techniques. Improvisation, Intuition, and Spontaneity are the most powerful tools in my studio.
Saws, lathes, grinders, and hands round out the other tools. Creating with these tools results in a set of refractive indexes that cast and reflect colors at the same time, continually changing the viewer’s experience.
Success to me occurs when one of my glass pieces captivates the viewer’s imagination and encourages them to rediscover something new each time they peer into it. Glass art brings a gentle glow, luminous color, and soft warmth into daily life.
